Face Your Fears

Face Your Fears

10 Sessions

Specific phobias develop when our natural caution around potential threats turns into overwhelming fear—fear that’s out of proportion to the actual danger. What starts as a natural, adaptive response can spiral into a pattern of avoidance. And while avoiding the feared situation may reduce anxiety in the moment, it strengthens the fear over time, making daily life feel more and more limited.

Our Face Your Fears plan combines exposure therapy—the gold standard for treating specific phobias—with immersive virtual reality (VR) technology. Designed for adults and older adolescents, this approach lets you safely engage with the situations you fear most, even those that are difficult to recreate in traditional therapy. We ship a VR headset directly to you, making it easy to access a wide range of fear-inducing scenarios from the comfort of your home.

The plan typically includes 10 weekly sessions, though many people start to notice improvement even sooner. Treatment begins with education about how fear works in the brain, followed by guided exposures that gradually increase in difficulty as your confidence grows. Whether you're working through fear of flying, public speaking, heights, enclosed spaces, or specific animals, VR allows for realistic practice in a safe, therapist-guided setting.

Sessions are delivered virtually, with your therapist coaching you in real time as you navigate fear-based scenarios.

The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek. - Joseph Campbell

Specific phobias affect roughly 10% of adults at some point in their lives. While it’s normal to feel nervous in certain situations, phobias involve intense fear that’s out of proportion to the actual risk—and they often lead to significant distress or disruption in daily life.

You might go out of your way to avoid elevators, skip events that involve public speaking, or feel your heart race at the thought of boarding a plane. Over time, the fear can start to shape your routines, limit your freedom, or impact your work, health, or relationships.

Common indicators for this plan include:

  • Fear of flying that prevents travel or causes extreme distress
  • Public speaking anxiety that limits career advancement
  • Height phobia that restricts activities or movement
  • Claustrophobia affecting elevator use or medical procedures
  • Driving anxiety, particularly on highways or bridges
  • Social anxiety in specific performance situations
  • Animal phobias (spiders, dogs) that alter daily routines
  • Medical procedure fears, particularly involving needles
  • Consistent avoidance behaviors related to specific fears
  • Physical symptoms (racing heart, shortness of breath) when confronted with feared stimulus

This plan is specifically designed for adults and older teens (16+) whose phobias are discrete and situation-specific. The VR-enhanced approach works best for phobias that can be effectively simulated in virtual environments.

How long does therapy take?

Specific phobias are among the most treatable conditions in behavioral health, with over 90% of people seeing significant improvement when they complete an exposure-based protocol. VR-enhanced exposure therapy builds on this success by offering even more flexibility and access without sacrificing results.

Treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment of your specific fear patterns. Next, we’ll create an exposure hierarchy together—a personalized roadmap that starts with the most manageable scenarios and progresses to more difficult ones. You'll also learn proven techniques to help you manage anxiety during exposures. The goal isn't to eliminate anxiety but change how you respond to it so it no longer controls your choices.

Treatment centers on immersive VR sessions  where you'll confront lifelike simulations of your feared situations with increasing intensity. For example, if you’re afraid of flying, you might progress from sitting in a virtual airplane at the gate to experiencing turbulence during flight. People with a fear of heights might advance from standing on a low virtual balcony to gradually higher elevations. Your therapist will be there every step of the way, offering real-time support and helping you process your emotional and physical reactions without falling back on avoidance..

Our virtual delivery model offers unique advantages for exposure work. The VR headset we provide gives you immediate access to a wide variety of realistic scenarios that would be difficult or even impossible to practice in person. And because the brain responds to virtual stimuli in ways similar to real-life experiences, this method creates lasting neurological changes while allowing you to do the work from the safety and comfort of your own space.

Therapy Lab clinicians hold advanced degrees in clinical psychology, or similar science-based clinical practices, and receive specialized training in both exposure therapy protocols and VR-enhanced intervention techniques. To learn more, please see the resources listed below.
